Training with Tech

by Cara Simpson, RD, CPT, CHC

Accountability is one of the most important factors in successful lifestyle behavior change. It’s how we check in with ourselves to see how we are doing with our goals. Without accountability, the once a week sweet allowance turns into two, three, and four. Without accountability, the five times per week workout goal turns into four, three, two, and one.  Luckily, there are many ways to stay accountable – friends, family, health professionals, and if all else fails your phone. Using technology to achieve your goals is convenient and motivating!

Sleep: Set brightness timers on your phone from 7pm - to 7am. This will help limit stimulation and improve sleep quality and quantity.

Nutrition: Download MyFitnessPal or other food diary apps to stay accountable with intake. Track calories, macronutrients, micronutrients, exercise and water intake!

Exercise: Purchase a MyZone Heart Rate Monitor and download the app to track workouts including intensity and duration. Compete with friends to earn points for your workouts!

Stress: Download Headspace or other meditation apps to help with stress management.
