Fitting in Fitness – Master Techniques on Time Management

by Cara Simpson, RD, CPT, CHC

Working long hours?

Long commute?

Family obligations?

Social obligations?

Too tired?

We get it! It’s hard to fit exercise into a busy schedule. Here are some tips on how to prioritize and fit fitness into your schedule:

Schedule your workout first thing in the morning: The only time you have control over is the time you wake up in the morning. After that, well, things just happen – last minute meetings, lunch with friends, happy hour after work, feeling tired after working all day. Plan your workout in the morning to prevent life’s happenings from getting in the way! Make it easier by planning your workout clothes and shoes the night before.

Mark it in your calendar: Actually make fitness a priority by adding it to your calendar. This is an important meeting with yourself. You can also schedule your workouts with a buddy to help keep you accountable.

Make every minute count: You only need about 20-30 minutes of exercise as long as it is effective! Perform high intensity interval training (HIIT) to get the most bang for your buck with a short workout.

Complete a time journal: Still unsure if you will have time to workout? Create a journal of what you do hour by hour during the day. This will help you see how much time you spend on social media or watching TV.
