Get Out and Play in May!
May is the time of year where we consistently see warmer days with summer right around the corner. It’s the perfect time to get out and play!
The World Health Organization defines physical activity as “any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure.” Being physically inactive can increase your risk for certain cancers and chronic diseases. Getting regular and adequate levels of physical activity can reduce those risks as well as improve bone health, functional health, energy balance, and weight control.
Physical activity should not be confused with exercise. Exercise, as defined by the WHO, “is a subcategory of physical activity that is planned, structured, repetitive, and purposeful in the sense that the improvement or maintenance of one or more components of physical fitness is the objective.” All exercise is physical activity, but not all physical activity is exercise.
While following a regimented exercise program has countless benefits, finding something you enjoy and will stay consistent with is equally as important. Celebrate National Sport and Fitness month by finding ways to add more physical activity into your routine.
Find an intramural league to join
Choose an old favorite like basketball, soccer, volleyball
Try something new such as squash or paddle tennis
Most leagues have different levels of play so you can find the one you’re comfortable with
Add more activity to your commute
Walk home if that’s a possibility
Get off one stop sooner
Do you drive? As soon as you get home, before going in the house, take a lap or two around the block
Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator
Incorporate walking meetings at work and walk while catching up and hanging out with friends and family
Participate in National Bike to Work Day on May 17th
Take advantage of the warmer weather and get outside and play
Remember the old school games such as tag, capture the flag, frisbee, go for a bike ride
While watching your kids sports games, walk up and down the field
Chores add up! Washing the car, vacuuming, yard-work, gardening, and more all count towards your physical activity goals
Aim to reach the Physical Activity Guidelines of 30 minutes per day, 5 days per week!
