Millions of adults in the U.S. supplement their diet with CoQ10. However, research on it is limited and proof of benefit is not clear for most symptoms. So why are we using it?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an antioxidant that helps cell function. CoQ10 is used to make energy for the cell’s growth and development. It can be manufactured in our body or consumed in the foods we eat. Naturally, our levels of CoQ10 decrease as we get older, and for some, it may be important to supplement or focus on CoQ10-rich food sources. (Always ask your doctor before taking any new supplements!) Symptoms of CoQ10 deficiency may be chest pain or high blood pressure.

CoQ10 supplements have been prescribed to help with migraines, asthma, high blood pressure or heart problems, to name a few. The best research surrounding CoQ10 has found to help lower heart failure risk and high blood pressure. Dosage varies based on the symptoms you are trying to reduce.

Food Sources of CoQ10:

  • Beef
  • Herring
  • Chicken
  • Trout
  • Animal organs: liver, hearts, etc.
  • Soybeans
  • Broccoli
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Egg Yolk
  • Avocado

If you’re eating plenty of these foods and you are still concerned about CoQ10, talk to your doctor for more information! Do not fall into the habit of taking supplements because you think they could be helpful to you. It is important to understand that our bodies are all so different and what is good for one person, may be harmful to another!
